When an object changes position over time, this is referred to as motion. Motion in a straight line is simply linear motion. This type of motion can either be uniform with constant velocity or non – uniform with varying velocity.
In the following equations for the motion in a straight line;

\(v=\) velocity in metres per second (ms\(^{-1}\))
\(∆s=\) change in displacement in metres (m)
\(∆t=\) change in time in seconds (s)
\(a=\) acceleration in metres per second per second (ms\(^{-2}\))

\(\displaystyle v={∆s\over ∆t}={ds\over dt}\)
\(\displaystyle a={d^2 s\over dt^2}={dv\over dt}\)

Additionally, in the equations below;

\(v=\) final velocity in metres per second (ms\(^{-1}\))
\(u=\) initial velocity in metres per second (ms\(^{-1}\))
\(a=\) acceleration in metres per second per second (ms\(^{-2}\))
\(t=\) time in seconds (s)
\(s=\) displacement in metres (m)

\(v=u+at\)
\(v^2=u^2+2as\)
\(\displaystyle s=ut+{at^2\over 2}\)
\(\displaystyle s=\left({u+v\over 2}\right)t\)
